Jan-Olof Svantesson
My dissertation from 1983 deals with the phonology and morphology of Kammu (aka Khmu, Kmhmu, etc.), an Austroasiatic language spoken in northern Laos and adjacent areas of Vietnam, Thailand and China by some 500.000 people. The work on Kammu continues in my present research projects.
Another research interest is Mongolian. Together with my coworkers Anna Tsendina, Anastasia Karlsson and Vivan Franzén I have written a comprehensive analysis of the phonology of Mongolian including its phonological develoment from the time of Chinggis Khan to the modern Mongolic languages. I have also translated into English and published the Kalmuck-Swedish dictionary of the missionary Cornelius Rahmn (1785-1853).

Jag medverkar som forskare i RJ-projekten "Informations- och diskursstruktur i samverkan: ett språktypologiskt perspektiv", lett av Anastasia Karlsson och "Digitalt multimediaarkiv för austroasiatiskt immateriellt kulturarv (Dig-AAA)" lett av Niclas Burenhult. Dessutom medverkar jag som seniorprofessor vid Inter Arts Center i VR-projektet "I gränslandet mellan sång och tal", lett av Håkan Lundström.
För tillfället är jag mest sysselsatt med att göra klart det lexikon över kammuspråket och kulturen (Dictionary of Kammu Yùan language and culture) som skrivits tillsammans med Kàm Ràw, Kristina Lindell och Håkan Lundström och som om allt går väl kommer ut senare i år.
