Person

I am specialized in the study of semiotic development and children’s understanding of pictures. I wonder how our children become skilled sign users. Communication is crucial in human culture, and I do not think we need to learn children to communicate. We pick up communication in the environment when we are born. However, it takes time to learn to use special characters in meanings, such as language or pictures, so that people understand and use these resources in much the same way as others do. Becoming skilled in sign use gives the individual new opportunities to understand and develop meanings together with others.
I have a background in visual art and from art history, I also teach visual rhetoric. Pictures are widely used in our daily lives but also have highly specialized uses in education, science and art. Picture understanding exhibit interaction of meanings that make them both easy and difficult to understand, and which provides the basis for a visual rhetoric.
