I am a professor and senior lecturer in Film Studies. My teaching covers most areas in the discipline, preferably film history, film analysis and theory, as well as I am supervising postgraduates and doctoral students. I am a member in a number of organizations such as SCMS, SASS, SAAS and NECS, and I am also a member of the editorial board for the journal "Music and the Moving Image" (Illinois University Press) and "The Soundtrack" (Intellect). In my research I have worked with film music in Swedish film, television and different aspects of Swedish film. I am interested in questions concerning national and cultural identity, representation, ideology and transnationality.
In my current project, entitled "Film, migratikon, identity. Sweden, America, and the Swedish-American" one aim is to explore Sweden's relation to Swedishness and America through the representations of the emigrant and Swedish-Americans in the national film before and during the Welfare State period, that is to say between 1910 and 1980. As a comparison to these questions at issue, and in order to see what happened to the Swedishness in the Diaspora, I am also exploring how the Swedish-Americans used the Swedish film to remember their native country, and to construct their cultural identity as Swedish-Americans. In addition, I analyze how Swedish-American women are portrayed in the American narrative film. In other words, what I am interested in is the ideological attitude in the Swedish Welfare state towards Swedishness and the ones who emigrated to America. Narrative films and the Swedish-American press are the prime materials, but I also use documentary films, television documentaries, amateur films, and newsreels.
