Decision-making during hospitalization: parents' and children's involvement.

Background. Ethical duties of health professionals include the obligation to enhance their patients' competence and ability to participate. Aims and objectives. To explore what kind of decisions and how these decisions were made during a child's hospitalization. Design. During a 9-week period 24 children and their parents were followed during the course of events at the hospital. In total 135 ho

Barnfamiljer används som ett empiriskt exempel för att illustrera de teorThe object of this thesis has been to study the relationship between consumption and economic scarcity from a theoretical perspective. I have used families with children as an empirical example to illustrate the theoretical framework. There are two main questions: The first focuses on the structures that create specific conditions for low-income consumers. The second relates to how the households

Flow cytometry DNA analysis and prediction of loco-regional recurrences after mastectomy in breast cancer

The study concerns whether DNA flow cytometry and estrogen receptor analysis might help predict which breast cancer patients, particularly node-positive ones, were at the greatest risk of developing loco-regional recurrence (LRR). Such patients would best benefit from postoperative radiotherapy following modified radical mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection. After this type of surgery, 50

Simplified two-parameter gamma distribution for derivation of synthetic unit hydrograph

Several methods for synthetic unit hydrographs are available in the literature. Most of them involve manual, subjective fitting of a hydrograph through few data points. Because it is difficult, the generated unit hydrograph is often left unadjusted for unit runoff volume. To circumvent this problem, a simplified version of the existing two-parameter gamma distribution is introduced to derive a syn

beta 1 Integrin and alpha-dystroglycan binding sites are localized to different laminin-G-domain-like (LG) modules within the laminin alpha 5 chain G domain

Laminins are a group of extracellular-matrix proteins important in development and disease. They are heterotrimers, and specific domains in the different chains have specialized functions. The G domain of the alpha5 chain has now been produced in transfected mammalian cells as single modules and two tandem arrays, alpha5LG1-3 and alpha5LG4-5 (LG is laminin G domain-like.). Using these fragments we

Nonmuscle Myosin motor of smooth muscle.

Nonmuscle myosin can generate force and shortening in smooth muscle, as revealed by studies of the urinary bladder from mice lacking smooth muscle myosin heavy chain (SM-MHC) but expressing the nonmuscle myosin heavy chains A and B (NM-MHC A and B; Morano, I., G.X. Chai, L.G. Baltas, V. Lamounier-Zepter, G. Lutsch, M. Kott, H. Haase, and M. Bader. 2000. Nat. Cell Biol. 2:371–375). Intracellular ca

A Novel Semi-Empirical Tire Model for Combined Slips

A new tyre-force model for simultaneous braking and cornering is presented, which is based on combining existing empirical models for pure braking and cornering with brush-model tyre mechanics. The aim is to offer an easy-to-use, accurate model for vehicle-handling simulations. On a working tyre the contact patch between the tyre and the road is, in general, divided into an adhesion region where t

Standpoint on imprinting of BCR and ABL

Cytogenetic studies of Ph-positive leukemic patients and their parents have indicated that chromosome 22 involved in the formation of the t(9;22) is of maternal origin, whereas chromosome 9 is preferentially of paternal origin. These data have suggested that the two genes BCR and ABL, which become fused through the translocation, might be imprinted, ie expressed in a parental-specific manner. Rece

Comparative cytogenetic and DNA flow cytometric analysis of 242 primary breast carcinomas

The cytogenetic and DNA flow cytometric findings in 242 breast carcinomas were compared. The combined use of both techniques improved the detection of abnormal cell populations from 65% by cytogenetic analysis alone and 59% by DNA flow cytometric analysis alone to 84%. Informative and comparable cytogenetic and flow cytometric data were obtained for 155 tumors. Among these 155 tumors, there was go

Astaxanthin-rich algal meal and vitamin C inhibit Helicobacter pylori infection in BALB/cA mice

Helicobacter pylori infection in humans is associated with chronic type B gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric carcinoma. A high intake of carotenoids and vitamin C has been proposed to prevent development of gastric malignancies. The aim of this study was to explore if the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis rich in the carotenoid astaxanthin and vitamin C can inhibit experimental H. pylori

Radiostereometric analysis in hip revision surgery--optimal time for index examination: 6 patients revised with impacted allografts and cement followed weekly for 6 weeks

We revised the hip (6 stems and 5 sockets) with impacted morselized allografts and cement in 6 patients. We followed prosthetic migration by roentgen radiostereometric analysis (RSA) every 7th day for 6 weeks after the first (index) examination performed on the first postoperative day before mobilization. Most of the migration occurred during the first 2 weeks. In most cases more than half of the
