Making the Most of It? : Understanding the social and productive dynamics of small farmers in semi-arid Iringa, Tanzania

Regnen är opålitliga, priser, marknadsföring och politiska ingrepp är oförutsägbaWhile much of semi-arid Africa is still sparsely populated with unused land, there are everywhere pockets of high and increasing population density in attractive locations. Small-scale farmers can respond to beginning land-scarcity in a number of ways. Through migration, through diversification of livelihoods, or through changes in their farming system. Which solution is chosen, depends not only o

Privatisation of the IT Sector in Sweden

Författaren försöThe majority of research on privatisation has been driven by, inter alia, economics. Some economists have argued that private ownership introduces capital market pressures into inefficient state bureaucracies. Private property rights are expected to maximise the incentives for management to achieve a high level of production efficiency. The argument put forward in this research is that in so far a

Developing New Measuring Technique Controlling Desalination Brine Concentration

Desalination is an important method and cost effective for producing potable water and is a rapidly growing technology worldwide. According to the International Desalination Association, IDA data base the amount of desalinated water soon will reach the 100 MCM per day, which means double of this amount (200 MCM/day) is called brine discharge or rejected amount. In this study, we planned to follow

Monitoring of cerebral oximetry in patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome

AIMS : Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a disorder of unknown aetiology characterized by orthostatic intolerance and tachycardia with diverse other symptoms, including neurocognitive deficits. Cerebral oximetry non-invasively measures cerebral tissue saturation (SctO2) and has been shown to be informative in syncope evaluation. We aimed to assess SctO2 in POTS patients and those

Resistance Through Acting : Ambivalent Practices of the No Border Musical

I ett Europa där gränskontroller intensifieras och deportationer ökar ställer denna avhandling frågor om möjligheter till motstånd och aktivism genom teater. Den tar sin utgångspunkt i en deltagande etnografisk undersökning av No Border Musical. No Border Musical skapades och sattes upp i Malmö under 2011–2013. Initiativet togs av personer kopplade till den lokala flyktingrättsrörelsen. Ungefär häIn a context of deportability and bordering practices, this thesis asks questions regarding possibilities and limitations of resistance through community theatre. It sets out from a participatory ethnographic exploration of the working process and performance of the No Border Musical. The No Border Musical was created in 2011–2013 in the city of Malmö in southern Sweden. It was initiated by people

Identification of shared and unique serum lipid profiles in diabetes mellitus and myocardial infarction

Background-Diabetes mellitus (DM) and cardiovascular disease are associated with dyslipidemia, but the detailed lipid molecular pattern in both diseases remains unknown. Methods and Results-We used shotgun mass spectrometry to determine serum levels of 255 molecular lipids in 316 controls, 171 DM, and 99 myocardial infarction (MI) events from a cohort derived from the Malmö Diet and Cancer study.

Modeling of energy consumption in GPS receivers for power aware localization systems

This paper proposes a first-principle model of GPS receivers, that allows us to exploit the trade-off between battery consumption and positioning accuracy. We present the model and propose a GPS sampling strategy that uses both the current positioning confidence, and information about the GPS status. We complement the GPS sensor with internal measurement units and show how the given model exposes

Evaluation of a method supporting the integration of packaging development into product development using an assessment framework for methodologies under development

This paper presents the evaluation of a method supporting the integration of packaging development into product development through the use of an assessment framework for methodologies under development. While the evaluation of the integration method itself is critical for its further development the main objective is to use this evaluation as a further testing of the assessment framework. The ass

The purpose of the study is to examine how library activities, which in various ways are intended to increase individuals’ digital skills, information literacy and participation in society can be understood an

Maktfyllda möten i medicinska rum: debatt, kunskap och praktik i svensk förlossningsvård 1960-1985

The main purpose of this thesis is to analyze debates around and changes in knowledge production and medical practices of childbirth between 1960 and 1985 in Sweden. The roles of the different actors involved, such as physicians, midwives, the National Board of Health and Welfare, the women’s movement and politicians are studied in four main contexts: medical practice and debate, the Swedish Parli

Estimating Uncertainty in Time-difference and Doppler Estimates

Sound and radio can be used to estimate the distance between a transmitter and a sender by correlating the emitted and received signal. Alternatively by correlating two received signals it is possible to estimate distance difference. Such methods can be divided into methods that are robust to noise and reverberation, but give limited precision and sub-sample refinements that are sensitive to noiseSound and radio can be used to estimate the distance between a transmitter and a sender by correlating the emitted and received signal. Therapist-guided internet-based psychodynamic therapy versus cognitive behavioural therapy for adolescent depression in Sweden : a randomised, clinical, non-inferiority trial

Background: Adolescent major depressive disorder (MDD) is highly prevalent and associated with lifelong adversity. Evidence-based treatments exist, but accessible treatment alternatives are needed. We aimed to compare internet-based psychodynamic therapy (IPDT) with an established evidence-based treatment (internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy [ICBT]) for the treatment of adolescents with d

From Housing Inequalities to an Unjust Energy Transition : Data-driven analyses of socio-technical links in the Swedish multifamily building stock

Improving energy performance in the Swedish multifamily building stock is an important undertaking in order to reach national and international targets for energy efficiency. However, growing economic inequalities in Sweden, manifested in the multifamily building stock as housing inequalities that entail segregation, overcrowding, and differences in standard of living, have led to low-income house

Altering the Focus from the Ostensible Object and Purpose of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons to Collateral Treaty Effects of Strategic Nature : International Law Comments on the Impact of the Treaty’s Prohibitions of Assistance and Development on Technology, Research and Defence-Industry Policies of States in Exposed Geostrategic Locations: The Case of Sweden

This chapter aims to discuss the phenomenon of altering the telos of a treaty by changing the focus of its object and purpose through treaty implementation. To examine the consequences in international law of altering the telos of a treaty, this contribution uses the example of the 2017 Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) against the backdrop of the considerations regarding a possi

Dynamical evolution of two planet systems into the white dwarf phase

In this contribution we present some preliminary results on the dynamical evolution of two planet systems around stellar hosts evolving from the main sequence to the white dwarf phase. The aim is to study the instabilities triggered by stellar evolution that may bring planets onto the stellar surface or produce planetary scale collisions (hence debris) that could explain the metallic atmospheric p

Pain burden in children with cerebral palsy (CPPain) survey : Study protocol

Pain is a significant health concern for children living with cerebral palsy (CP). There are no population-level or large-scale multi-national datasets using common measures characterizing pain experience and interference (ie, pain burden) and management practices for children with CP. The aim of the CPPain survey is to generate a comprehensive understanding of pain burden and current management o

Exploring patient perspectives : A qualitative inquiry into healthcare perceptions, experiences and satisfaction in Lebanon

BACKGROUND: Patient perspectives have received increasing importance within health systems over the past four decades. Measures of patient experience and satisfaction are commonly used. However, these measures do not capture all the information that is available through engaging with patients. An improved understanding of the various types of patient perspectives and the distinctions between them
