Emulators for dynamic vegetation models - Supervised learning in large data sets

The observed and expected changes in the environment due to human actions implies risks that future food production will be insufficient. Pre- dicting the impact these changes have on the agricultural system could be beneficial by allowing for proactive mitigating efforts. The prediction of these impacts often involve large computer programs that simulate the behavior of the environment. By implem

Decide for the future by looking back: The perceived impact of predictive analytics to support decision making in the construction industry

Based on data from the past, predictive analytics can give a competitive advantage for companies when it is used to forecast the future. Specifically, predictive analytics can be used to aid decision makers in strategic planning. As the construction industry faces challenges with both more costly and complicated projects, predictive analytics can support decision makers in the industry in the most

The Information Mechanism of Reverse Logistics System among E-commerce Giants: A Comparative Case Study

Introduction: In recent years, the e-commerce industry has developed at extremely high speed all over the world and becomes the sunrise industry. Besides, there is a megatrend that customers are pursuing better experience along the whole shopping journey. Statistics show that good reverse logistics service is an efficient way to improve customers satisfaction level. Among the reverse logistics, th

Taking Innovative Products to the Market: Development of a Working Model for Adoption in Collaboration with Sony Mobile Communications

Background/Problem Description: Creating innovative products and take them to the market is a struggle for many companies around the globe. At the Department of Security & Enterprise at Sony Mobile Communications in Lund it was believed that the innovation process could be enhanced if more focus would be put on pricing, adoption and timing. The belief at the department was that these three fac

Sales and Operations Planning - Identifying and creating product families

Challenges to disaster risk reduction: A study of stakeholders’ perspectives in Imizamo Yethu, South Africa

South Africa is a complex and dynamic society, with overwhelming and increasing problems with disaster risk in the vulnerable urban communities in and around its rapidly growing metropolitan centres. The purpose of this study is to improve the understanding of the challenges for disaster risk reduction in such communities. It focuses on the case of Imizamo Yethu, in the Western Cape, in order to b

Bridging the macro and the micro by considering the meso: reflections on the fractal nature of resilience

We pursued the following three interconnected points: (1) there are unexplored opportunities for resilience scholars from different disciplines to cross-inspire and inform, (2) a systems perspective may enhance understanding of human resilience in health and social settings, and (3) resilience is often considered to be fractal, i.e., a phenomenon with recognizable or recurring features at a variet

Forwarding a challenging task: Seven elements for capacity development for disaster risk reduction

Capacity development for disaster risk reduction is an important process to substantially reduce disaster losses, which threaten sustainable development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. This paper presents seven elements for capacity development for disaster risk reduction that has been applied in practise with noteworthy results. The seven elements are: (1) Terminology, (2

Series Decomposition of fractional Brownian motion and its Lamperti transform

The Lamperti transformation of a self-similar process is a stationary process. In particular, the fractional Brownian motion transforms to the second order stationary Gaussian process. This process is represented as a series of independent processes. The terms of this series are Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes if H < 1/2, and linear combinations of two dependent Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes whose two

Forgetting Anticipation: the double gap between knowledge, policy and practice of risk assessment in Botswana and Tanzania

A society’s ability to anticipate disaster is a fundamental part of its resilience. The purpose of this paper is to investigate potential gaps between theory, policy and practice concerning functions for risk assessment in the governmental systems of southern African development countries, particularly Botswana and Tanzania. It applies comparative case studies with data collected in focus groups a

Operationalising resilience and getting culture back in

It is increasingly suggested that societies must be resilient to be safe and sustainable. While there are many approaches to resilience available, not all of them operationalize the concept to the extent of guiding what to look for when observing actual communities. This is a requisite for linking the conceptual and the actual, and vital for our ability to develop societal resilience. Drawing on r

GDNF fails to exert neuroprotection in a rat {alpha}-synuclein model of Parkinson's disease.

The neuroprotective effect of the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor has been extensively studied in various toxic models of Parkinson's disease. However, it remains unclear whether this neurotrophic factor can protect against the toxicity induced by the aggregation-prone protein α-synuclein. Targeted overexpression of human wild-type α-synuclein in the nigrostriatal system, using adeno

The Importance of Explicit Discussions of What is Valuable in Efforts to Reduce Disaster Risk: A Case Study from Fiji

This article argues for the importance of explicit discussions of what is valuable as a foundation for any disaster risk reduction initiative to be effective. It does so by stating that it is impossible to talk about risk at all if not having some notion of uncertain potential impacts on something that humans value. What is assumed as valuable and important to protect is then determining what haza

Simulation of ethanol production processes based on enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials using ASPEN PLUS

The process simulator ASPEN PLUS was used for simulation of an ethanol production process based on enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials. The effect of water recycling, necessary to reduce the amount of waste water and to increase the ethanol concentration in the feed to the distillation, was investigated. For a process based on 20 t/h raw material, the amount of waste water can be red
