Swedish Language Courses for Exchange Students
Information and Guidelines for Admissions
As an added value to the student exchange programme and to awake an interest in the language and culture of the host country and as well as to facilitate communication, Lund University offers Swedish Language courses to exchange students.
About 50 % of the incoming exchange students who apply to these courses will be fortunate to obtain a place. Unfortunately there are no economic resources to offer a place to every student who wish to learn Swedish. These courses are normally outside the scope of the exchange agreements, which means that exchange students cannot demand a place in these courses.
1. Structure of the courses
Teaching is offered through seven (7) modules:
SVE E01 Swedish for Exchange Students, Level 1 (from basic)
SVE E02 Swedish for Exchange Students, Level 2
SVE E03 Swedish for Exchange Students, Level 3
SVE E04 Swedish for Exchange Students, Level 4
SVE E05 Swedish for Exchange Students, Level 5
SVE E06 Swedish for Exchange Students, Level 6
Swedish for Exchange Students, Level 7, Special courses (skandinavister see item 3.1)
For syllabuses see item 11 below.
2. Workload, credits, attendance and withdrawals
The workload for these courses is as demanding as any other regular courses. Attendance is obligatory and the rate of absences will affect negatively the final grades.
If you wish to withdraw from these courses you must notify, both, your own coordinator and the course administrator.
Discuss with your coordinator if the credits for this course shall be included in the expected 30 ECTS / full time semester or be counted as extra credits.
All these modules are worth 7,5 Swedish University credits (=7,5 ECTS).
Final schedules, reading lists, and other information will be distributed during the introductory meeting.
3. Courses offered during the Spring semester 2010
During the spring 2010 the following levels will be offered:
- SVEE01 Swedish for Exchange Students, Level 1
- SVEE02 Swedish for Exchange Students, Level 2
- SVEE03 Swedish for Exchange Students, Level 3
- SVEE04 Swedish for Exchange Students, Level 4
- SVEE05 Swedish for Exchange Students, Level 5
- SVEE06 Swedish for Exchange Students, Level 6
3.1 Special courses (skandinavister)
Swedish for Exchange Students, Level 7, is specially designed for exchange students who have vast previous knowledge in Swedish and have Swedish as one of their major subjects at their home university (ie skandinavister). The students who will be admitted will have a variety of regular Swedish courses to choose from.
4. How to apply and self-evaluation test
The only way to apply is by completing the on-line application (see below under item 9) between 17 August and 22 August (Deadline).
Students admitted through agreements with the Faculty of Engineering (LTH) must contact their coordinator if they wish to apply to Swedish Levels 1-2 since alternative Swedish-EXTA20 – 21 are offered specially designed for LTH incoming exchange students.
The exchange student coordinators will be requested to rank their students who applied as to which students will be granted priority.
All students interested in joining these courses above the initial level must take a simple self-evaluation test in order to be effectively placed in the right level and group. Please quote the results of your test (write only the number of correct answers, e.g. 15) when you apply.
Exchange students may normally be admitted to one module during their whole stay in Lund. In certain cases students may be allowed to continue to a higher level depending on availability and the student's performance. Information about the possibility to continue will be announced towards the end of the course and decision will be made after the final test and only with the coordinator's consent.
5. Preliminary admissions
The applicants themselves are responsible to check if they have been admitted. No individual notifications will be sent. The results of the preliminary admission will be published (find the link under item 10 below) and also posted outside the International Desk (Sandgatan 3R), the International Liaison Office of the Faculty of Humanities (Helgonabacken 12: A143) and the Section of Swedish as a Foreign Language (SOL-Centre, L-wing, 2nd floor) by Friday 27 August, after 12.00 noon. See item 10 below.
Some students will be placed on a waiting list in case of vacancies. Those students on the waiting list who get a place will be contacted immediately.
6. Introductory meeting and registration
The final admission will take place when the student registers at the introductory meeting. A student who gets admitted but does not attend the introductory meeting or first lesson will loose his/her place, which will be released to the next student on the waiting list. The enrolment forms will be signed at this occasion and not before.
A student who has a justifiable reason for not attending the introductory meeting and wishes to keep his/her place, must notify the course administrator by e-mail with enough anticipation that the notice will arrive at least the day before the introductory meeting.
7. Introductory meetings
The introductory meetings will take place in the beginning of September.
8. Levels and schedules
Lectures for level 1-6 (SVEE01-06) is half time pace and take place in the afternoon, in general twice per week.
9. Applications
The application's site is closed.
