Person

I am a PhD student in General Linguistics. I work with gender systems, focusing on the dialect of Jämtland in northern Sweden. I am investigating the three-gender system in the dialect and how it is changing to become more like the two-gender system of standard Swedish. I am primarily interested in how sociological and semantic factors influence gender assignment. This work builds on my Master’s thesis, which compared grammatical gender in two speech communities of Jämtland.

My other interests include historical linguistics and Amazonian languages. I completed my Bachelor’s thesis at UC Berkeley on noun classes in the Kampan languages.
