Description

This is the BA course in English, that is, the course you need to finish in order to be able to get a BA (bachelor's degree) in English. You need a BA in order to go on to get an MA (master's degree).

At Lund University you get a BA in either English linguistics or English literature. However, your do not need to choose your specialisation before the start of the course, and you will get more information in the intro meeting. It may be a good idea, though, to start thinking about this choice as early as possible.

This course is also offered as a part-time course, in which term 1 consists of all the course modules (see below) except the degree project, and term 2 is spent completeing the 15-credit  degree project.

If you have studied English at a university elsewhere, you need to have finished 60 relevant credits to be eligible. If you haven't yet got 60 credits of English, you may apply for a waiver. Please see the instructions here: http://www.sol.lu.se/engelska/for-studenter/dispens/

The contents of the course (English level 3)

This course is considerably more academic than the previous courses in English (ENGA04 and ENGA22), and the main focus is on the degree project (worth 15 credits). The choice between literature and linguistics also determines most of the other courses you take. If your specialisation is linguistics, you take English linguistics (6 credits) and typically a linguistic Elective course (5 credits), while if your specialisation is literature, you take English literature (6 credits) and usually a literary Elective course (5 credits).

Finally, there is also a proficiency component (4 credits), consisting of Vocabulary (2 credits) and Translation (2 credits).

After the course (English level 3)

After having finished this course you can get a BA (bachelor's degree) in English, provided that you also have 90 credits in other subjects. When you have a BA, you can apply to a master's programme and go on to get an MA (master's degree) in English. At the Centre for Languages and Literature (SOL) there is a master's programme in translation, a master's programme in literature, culture and media, and a master's programme in languages and linguistics.

There is also the possibility of studying 1.5 years at Campus Helsingborg to become a school teacher (KPU Kompletterande Pedagogisk Utbildning), when you have 90 or 120 credits of English and the same number of credits in another relevant subject. Please consult the relevant information about KPU at http://www.uvet.lu.se/utbildning/amneslararutbildning/kompletterande-pedagogisk-utbildning/.

Today it is normally necessary to have an MA if you want to be a Ph.D. student and eventually get a Ph.D. and teach English at university level.

We also offer the English BA course as a part-time course (50% = 15 credits per semester). Part-time students take the following modules their first semester (15 credits in total):

0701 Literary Theory and Method (6 credits) or 0702 English Linguistics (6 credits), 0703 Translation (2 credits), 0704 Vocabulary (2 credits), 0705 Elective Course (5 credits)

Then the part-time students devote their second semester to their bachelor's degree project (15 credits).

From the spring of 2016 the first and the second term of the English BA course will have their own course codes, so that English 61-75 credits will be ENGH05 and English 76-90 will be ENGK06. However, those of you who have already been registered to take ENGK01 at half-speed should continue to do so.

How to apply

Lund University uses a national application system run by University Admissions in Sweden. It is only possible to apply during the application periods: October–January for autumn semester and June–August for spring semester.

Extended application deadline

Sometimes the application deadline is extended for a specific programme or course. In these cases you will find the message "open for late application" by the programme/course information on universityadmissions.se. You apply with the usual application steps. As long as this message is showing, it is possible to apply, but late applications are processed in order of date, so it is still important to apply as soon as possible. Please note that if the programme/course does not have an extended deadline, it is not possible to apply late.

First or Second Admission Round?

All international students are encouraged to apply to the First admission round. This round takes place many months before the start of a semester and gives students the time they need to pay their tuition fees, apply for and receive their residence permit (if required), find housing, etc.

The Second admission round is an alternative for students from EU/EEA countries as they do not need a residence permit. Non-EU/EEA students will most likely not have enough time to obtain their permit before the start of the semester. However, even EU/EEA students are advised to apply during the First admission round, as some programmes can be applied for only in the January round. Also, this provides applicants with an admission decision much earlier, which is helpful in making decisions about their studies.

Tuition Fees

Non-EU/EEA citizens

Citizens of a country outside of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland are required to pay tuition fees. You pay one instalment of the tuition fee in advance of each semester.

EU/EEA citizens and Switzerland

There are no tuition fees for citizens of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland.

Application fee

If you are required to pay tuition fees, you are generally also required to pay an application fee of SEK 900 (approximately EUR 100) when you apply at universityadmissions.se. You pay one application fee regardless of how many programmes or courses you apply to.
